For its strategic location in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, the Port of Leixões holds a privileged position in the European port system context. Leixões is mainly an export port, handling more than 15 million tonnes of goods and 700 thousand TEU’s, and serving virtually all types of ships, cargo, as well as cruises.
It has several regular line services to the main European and world ports including direct connections to Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and other African countries. In total, this port exports to 184 countries, exerting influence over an area of 14 million inhabitants.
This port infrastructure represents 6% of Portuguese employment and 11% of employment in the North Region and handles 11% of the region's GDP and 6% of the national GDP, standing out as the main export port in the country and exerting considerable influence in supporting the industrial and business fabric of the North Region.
