Breakfast in Rotterdam Three Ways

RPPC's director shares her favorites for one on the run, for two and for meetings

Rotterdammer Hedi Visscher, director for the Rotterdam Port Promotion Council (RPPC), knows the best way to start a busy day is with a good breakfast. Here, she shares her childhood favorites and offers three great recommendations for visitors to Breakbulk Europe – whether that's a quick meal on the run to Rotterdam Ahoy, a sit down with a good friend or a breakfast meeting with colleagues.

Q: What would a traditional Dutch breakfast include?

I’m not sure if there is such a thing as a traditional Dutch breakfast, maybe bread but I never eat that in the morning. When thinking of something traditional, one tends to think back to their childhood. I remember a rather curious and maybe traditional breakfast I used to eat at my grandparents’ house. It’s simply big round biscuits with milk poured over them. The trick was to pour the milk so slowly that the biscuits would absorb it and would become soggy. I have not eaten it since my childhood and I doubt if I would still like it today (don’t think so, haha).

Q: What's your favorite breakfast on a leisurely Sunday morning? How about if you're running late for work?

On workdays I normally eat Greek yoghurt with fruit and nuts and a cup of Lady Grey tea. When I have more time in the morning, I love having an extensive breakfast with my family with bread rolls and waffles. My all-time favorite breakfast is a French croissant with cream butter but that can only really be eaten in France.

What are your three favorite places in Rotterdam for breakfast?

For an on-the-run breakfast, try Jordy’s Bakery. There are four locations where you can grab a quick breakfast like a bread roll or a ham/cheese toast (tosti). The bread itself is delicious – that must have something to do with the fact that Jordy stems from a family of bakers

Jordy's Bakery
Nieuwe Binnenweg 97a

Open every day from 8:00 to 18:00

Meeting a friend? I love to have breakfast with friends at Bertmans. My favorite dish is the brunch platter, packed with all kinds of delicious bites like a small banana pancake and coconut yoghurt with maple syrup. Although it’s in the city center and often quite busy I enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Also great for lunch or dinner!

Bertmans
Karel Doormanstraat 292

A breakfast meeting: When working in the port or maritime industry everyone loves to watch over the water and see the ships sailing by. At least I do! Where better to have a great view over the water whilst enjoying historic grandeur than at Hotel New York? It can be a bit noisy but if you pick one of the tables on the left from the entrance, you’ll be fine!
