The world’s largest project cargo and breakbulk event

Silvio Ferrando

Marketing Manager Ports of Genoa

Born in Genoa, in 1966, he graduated in Economics at the local University in 1989.

In the late 80’s he began his own career in shipping and trade in the UK, as a trainee in the chartering division of a London based shipbroking firm. He moved then more directly into port business in the Netherlands and Germany, where he served as a port documentation and water clerk for a well established network of shipping agencies.

Back in Genoa, he joined the local Port Authority as a junior executive in the Organization and Industrial Relations Department, to assist structuring the labour change management process within the implementation of the port of Genoa privatization scheme, lately successfully completed.

He moved in late 90’s to Finporto di Genova SpA, a consulting and business incubator set up and controlled by the Port Authority of Genoa, where he took charge of a series of international projects and port partnerships overseas. Back to the Port Authority of Genoa central main offices, he held the job as Marketing Manager Jr from 2005 to 2011, acting as trade facilitator and port business developer.

He left Europe in 2012, to be part of the USA based team of a primary marine container carrier within the Marine Operations Dept. and finally got back to Genoa, to run - since 2016 - the Marketing Unit activities for “Ports of Genoa”, the commercial brand adopted by the all new Port Authority of Western Ligurian Sea, a public port conglomerate governing 4 port basins in Liguria (North West Italy), encompassing 30 different terminals, covering all kind of commodities, handling more than 70 Million tons of cargo per year.

Breakbulk Europe Main Stage Sessions

The Role of European Ports in Supply Chain Efficiency: Challenges, Opportunities & Demand

Ports are an integral part of the project cargo supply chain and, as such, changes and challenges in ports acutely affect other sectors. Currently, labour shortages, strikes, sustained increases in port charges, and inadequate port infrastructure are all impacting the wider supply chain. Collaboration across the board is required to ensure cargo movements are as efficient and predictable as possible for all parties. This session will bring together a panel from key European ports, as well as the wider supply chain, to examine the causes and possible solutions to the current challenges being faced and to map a path forward to improve efficiency across the board.
